Milan was supposed to be the first Corona Walk – of course we did not know at the time that it would be Corona and that our walks would be called that :). And just when we planned the trip, the Covid-19 pandemic broke out and the world will never be the same. So instead of Milan, we ended up in Vukovar where the Corona Walks adventure began. And now, on our 60th anniversary journey, we realize the initial idea...
Milano
The trip to Milan was also an opportunity to try out our new pet and the future eco-traffic for our excursions – the blue Renault Captur plug-in hybrid that we already met during our previous walk in Grožnjan.
We drive along the highway and reach the hotel without any problems – the neighbourhood where the hotel is close to the highway and has a direct connection to the centre of Milan via an excellent metro line (5 minutes on foot). The ride takes about twenty minutes, and the ticket price is 2.2 euros for a ride that can take a maximum of one and a half hours per zones 1, 2 and 3 (that's all you will need).
Piazza del Duomo and Vittorio Emmanuele II Gallery
After about twenty minutes, we exit the metro directly to the square in front of the cathedral. The crowd is indescribable. So we gave up trying out the recommended places in the gallery and went on.
Castello Sforzesco
From the crowds of the center we run towards Sforzesco Castle in which it is located the famous Pinakotheque.
Parco Sempione
We continue through Sempione Park.
Vertical gardens (Bosco verticale)
Probably the most famous green buildings: Bosco verticale in this part of Europe are the work of Stefano Boeri who set new standards in rethinking the ecological approach to building skyscrapers.
Lunch
We picked a pizzeria. Pizzeria di porta Garibaldi on the nearby Corso Cosmo, the selection was random, but the pizzas were great – that's what it was Best Pizza in Milan! A and Risotto alla Milanese with turmeric was excellent, drinking local red beer (although a glass of Heineken). The prices of pizza are from 10 € to 11,5 €, risotto 10 €. Large craft beer is 6 €.
We're heading back to the center.
After a refreshing lunch we return to the center, and soon we enter the zone of fashion twilight...
Piazza del Duomo
After walking more than 12 km and a morning drive of 5 hours, we are tired and we start our journey to the hotel. Tomorrow is a shocking day, but we conclude that we have seen a lot in Milan, and the lakes lure us to escape the crowds. Executive decision – going north – to Lake Como.
