Om, Ommmm, Oooommmmish.

Due to our long-term connection with the industry, we start our journey to Omišalj with prejudices, ready to accept dirt and pollution of the environment with unpleasant smells and noise. We want to explore the coexistence of failed and new industrial plants.

The plan is to walk a 15-kilometer circular path that we have agreed to ourselves. We park a few meters above the Riva of Pope John Paul II and head towards the Mirine site.

Omišalj

Work is being done on the waterfront, but now it is calm and quiet. All that follows us is the sound of the barge swinging. No one peeps out of the old houses. Is there anyone in it at all?

The road along the Pesja beach through the forest leads us to JANAF and the LNG terminal. These are not scenes we would like to see on vacation, nor is the soundtrack of gas flowing from the ship to the terminal pleasant for meditation.

Fortunately, Omišalj offers many charming gems that still need to be honed.

Archaeological Park

Archaeological Park Fulfinum - Mirine It's a nice place to rest if you turn your back on the sea. The remains of an ancient settlement (Fulfinum) and basilicas from the period of early Christianity (Mirine) are located in a protected bay, right by the sea. They have been partially restored with funds from an EU fund. Maintenance is poor, almost embarrassing. We have seen similar practices in significant localities as well.

We continue along the marked path on the Fortičina Viewpoint to which lead wooden stairs laid on a lightning bolt.

An ideal place for a break with Terranino and Jegermeister, and a photo shoot with the backdrop of Omišalj. ⁇ ⁇

Omišalj

Ommmm, Omišalj

We'll be back to you in a few minutes.

Along the main road we reach the center. We pass by the memorial park Sv. Mikul and we enter the old town. It abounds in sights. We wind through the narrow streets, enjoy walking around the stone houses, the water tower, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the town loggia. We admire the view from the viewpoint of Dubec.

Devastated scene from the lookout at the Učka Hotel. There's been no life here for a long time. Something bad went wrong, but it is difficult to conclude that only the industrial backdrop influenced the collapse of this tourist potential.

We'd love to stay longer, but we've got a long way to go to camp.

Park Dubec

Through Dubec Park A spiral path leads to the waterfront. Nature at the very heart of this charming place. It's already common for us to see garbage dumped outside the bins. And there's no shortage of them here. We picked something up, but for everyone to be taken care of, we should roll up our sleeves well. ⁇

A broken tree got in our way on the track. We tried to pluck it out and free the passageway, but the root still holds it tightly to the earth's stingy soil. We leave the job to the professionals.

Walking by the sea relaxes. Old, mostly large farms are intertwined harmoniously blended into greenery and sterile reinforced concrete new buildings without a single tree on modest gardens.

The new road by the sea is dominated by a massive fence that would not be embarrassed even by the highway. The designer of the traffic solution insisted on a high safety factor, so what does it cost, let it cost. ⁇ ⁇

The drill for the future laying of the optical cable is brought by an underground route to each object. There's nothing, everything was thought of!

We'll be back in a year or two to see how much of this smart infrastructure potential is being used.

Camp Omišalj

It is located at the Ideal Position for tourists who come to Krk by plane. ADAC He was awarded the title Superplatz for 2021. We don't know the criteria.

It is advertised on the site as “a place where nature and a luxurious holiday meet”!?! But the plane shows that it lacks the natural shade of trees. They are planted, but to the true shade will pass another (some) year.

Tourists are now gone, the ramp is down. Rabbits, ducks, popcorn, goats, ponies, donkeys seem to be the only permanently inhabited inhabitants of the camp.

The return to Omišalj passes faster with the planning of an ideal meal suitable for the walker after 15 km.

Gastro corner

At this time of year, many facilities are closed, little was lacking to give up the search for something nearby. Restaurant Noštromo There's a lifeline for us in Malinska.

We are warmed by the fire from the fireplace, but also by a warm broth. Pork medallions with croquettes are juicy, but a portion is not for those of great appetite. Fortunately, the meat platter for 2 people is excellent and abundant, so the third starving person joined the consumption. Risotto with vegetables correct. With a few feta breads and anointed plates, we conclude the main course.

There is room for dessert only with one member, while the rest of the team finishes eating coffee. A well-opened red wine of the house was drunk in reasonable quantities.

Route

The trail is not particularly demanding, the part around the archaeological site is well marked. The rest of the route was along the roads.

The ascents are not too high, but this is a typical example of a route that is not very suitable for summer activities – there are large sections in the open.
